GREENOCK POLICE OFFICER CALLUM MCSPORRAN SENTENCED FOR TWO-YEAR DOMESTIC ABUSE CAMPAIGN IN GREENOCK AND RENFREW

A former police officer from Greenock, Callum McSporran, has been convicted for orchestrating a prolonged and disturbing campaign of domestic abuse against a woman over a span of two years. The abuse, which included disturbing incidents at various locations, notably at police stations in Greenock and Renfrew, has shocked the local community and raised serious concerns about safety and misconduct within law enforcement circles.

According to court reports, McSporran’s abusive behavior began in October 2021 and persisted until October 2023. His victim was subjected to relentless psychological manipulation, threats, and invasive surveillance tactics. The perpetrator’s tactics included repeatedly threatening to harm himself as a means of exerting control over her, a disturbing method intended to instill fear and compliance. He also threatened to disclose private details of her personal life to her colleagues and friends, warning her that failure to obey his demands would result in the destruction of her reputation.

The abuse was not confined to their private residence but extended to various locations across Renfrew and Greenock. McSporran’s aggressive behavior was documented at properties in Renfrew, as well as at police offices in both Renfrewshire and Greenock. His actions involved demanding access to her phone and her location, monitoring her movements through doorbell cameras, and keeping a close watch on her social media activity. His controlling tactics aimed to isolate her from her loved ones, turning friends and family members against her, thereby increasing her vulnerability.

Furthermore, McSporran was recorded filming his victim when she was visibly distressed, adding a layer of intimidation and violation to his actions. His behavior was characterized by threats, manipulation, and constant surveillance, creating an environment of fear and helplessness for the woman. Some of these disturbing incidents took place within the premises of Greenock police station, raising questions about the oversight and conduct of a former law enforcement officer.

In court, McSporran, who resides in Erskine, was sentenced at Paisley Sheriff Court. The court imposed a community payback order, which includes supervision and the requirement to complete 160 hours of unpaid community service. Additionally, a non-harassment order was issued, prohibiting him from making any contact with the victim for a period of two years. Police Scotland confirmed that McSporran is no longer employed as a police officer, reflecting the force’s stance on misconduct and abuse.

A police spokesperson emphasized their ongoing commitment to investigating violence against women and girls, reaffirming the importance of ensuring that women feel safe and protected. The case serves as a stark reminder of the potential for abuse of power and the critical need for vigilance and accountability within institutions meant to serve and protect the community.
