CALLUM MCDOUGALL FROM BUCKLEY SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN NORTH WALES

In October 2019, a disturbing case involving Callum Iain McDougall, a resident of Buckley, came to light through a series of criminal proceedings that highlighted the serious nature of his offences. The case centered around McDougall encouraging two underage girls to perform sexual acts via a live webcam, a revelation that shocked the local community and drew attention from national authorities.

According to reports, McDougall engaged in sending vile messages to the girls, urging them to expose themselves on the webcam platform. The social media company hosting the live stream became suspicious of the activities and promptly alerted American authorities. These authorities, in turn, contacted the National Crime Agency (NCA) in the UK, which coordinated the investigation with North Wales Police.

When police officers spoke to the two young girls, they initially claimed that they had not been coerced and that they were merely experimenting or 'messing about.' Despite this, the authorities proceeded with an investigation, and McDougall was arrested in February of that year. During the court proceedings, the impact of his actions was vividly illustrated through a statement read by the mother of one of the victims at Mold Crown Court.

The mother described how her daughter had been profoundly affected by McDougall’s actions, stating that her child had 'lost her spark and her smile,' and had fallen behind in her schoolwork. The girl was also struggling with emotional distress, asking questions about the people who had asked her to perform indecent acts, and had begun to self-harm as a result of her trauma. The mother emphasized that such behavior was neither clever nor humorous, condemning the exploitation of children for sexual gratification as 'sick.' She expressed her deep concern that her daughter felt 'dirty and worthless' because of what had happened.

McDougall, aged 29 at the time of his arrest, claimed to be remorseful, stating that he was sickened by his own actions. He explained that he had been isolated and had no contact with his own child. He also revealed that he had been bullied during his school years and suffered from low self-esteem. When questioned about the webcam footage, McDougall claimed not to remember viewing it, and when shown the recordings, he believed the girls to be around 13 or 14 years old.

His defense lawyer, Simon Mintz, highlighted that McDougall had listened to the victim’s mother’s testimony and acknowledged the harm caused by exploiting vulnerable minors. However, Judge Huw Rees noted that McDougall’s claim of amnesia regarding the broadcast made it difficult for the probation service to fully assess his motivations. The judge pointed out that McDougall’s distorted perceptions of children as sexual objects indicated deeply ingrained deviant thought patterns that he was unwilling to confront openly.

Prior to sentencing, McDougall had been placed on a lengthy community order aimed at addressing his issues through an internet sex offender program. The court also heard that his former partner was shocked to discover indecent images of children on his mobile phone. When she confronted him, he begged her not to report him to the police. Nevertheless, authorities were informed, and subsequent investigations uncovered indecent images and videos stored on his phone and laptop. Chat logs revealed that McDougall engaged in fantasy conversations with others, sharing and viewing indecent images of children. However, the full extent of his offending was not entirely known, as he had not provided access to certain cloud-based accounts, including Dropbox and Kik Messenger.

Ultimately, McDougall was sentenced to 18 months in prison. Additionally, he was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for a period of ten years, marking a significant legal response to his disturbing actions and underscoring the seriousness with which such offences are treated in the UK.
