MONTROSE MAN BRUCE BURGESS CAUGHT WITH CHILD INDECENT IMAGES AT GLASGOW AIRPORT
In a serious case that highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat the distribution and possession of illegal material, Bruce Burgess, a resident of Montrose, was apprehended at Glasgow Airport after arriving from Dubai on January 23. The 65-year-old was stopped by Border Force officers during routine security checks, prompting a search of his baggage.During the search, officers discovered DVDs containing highly disturbing indecent images of children engaged in sexual activities. These images were classified in the two most severe categories, indicating their extreme nature and the seriousness of the offense. Burgess, when questioned, claimed that he was returning home after a holiday in Thailand, accompanied by a friend, and had no idea that such illicit material was in his possession.
Following the discovery, Burgess was taken into custody and charged with possessing indecent images of children, a violation of section 52A of The Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982. He subsequently appeared before Paisley Sheriff Court, where he pleaded guilty to the charges. As part of his sentencing, Burgess was ordered to complete 220 hours of unpaid community service and was placed on the sex offenders register for a period of 15 months. Additionally, a supervision order was imposed, requiring him to adhere to certain conditions during this time.
John McGowan, a representative of Border Force in Scotland, emphasized the importance of their role in protecting the public from such heinous crimes. He stated, “Border Force officers play an important frontline role in protecting the Scottish public, working hard to ensure this type of shocking material is not brought into the country. We take possession of these types of images very seriously, and as this case shows, we will work to ensure that those involved in this appalling trade are stopped and brought to justice.”
It is noteworthy that this incident is not isolated. In December 2012, Burgess was also involved in a similar case where he was found with DVDs containing indecent images of children after returning from Thailand. That case resulted in the same sentence of 220 hours of unpaid work and a 15-month registration on the sex offenders register. The repeated nature of these offenses underscores the persistent efforts of authorities to address and prevent such criminal activities, especially involving individuals returning from international travel with illicit material.
