GLASGOW MAN TO STAND TRIAL ACCUSED OF MURDER AND DOMESTIC ABUSE OF JOANNE NEWLANDS
A man accused of killing a woman a few weeks after allegedly attempting to harm her is scheduled to go to trial next year in Glasgow.Brian Hughes is accused of repeatedly hitting, stamping on, and kicking Joanne Newlands on her head, neck, and body, or causing blunt force trauma between March 13 and 17 of this year.
He is also charged with neglecting to seek medical assistance, which left her badly injured and contributed to her death at her residence in Knightswood.
Additionally, Hughes is accused of stealing a bracelet and ring from her and attempting to kill her by squeezing her neck until she lost consciousness, during the period from January 1 to 6 at the same address.
When the case was heard at the High Court in Glasgow on July 15, Hughes pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The court was told that the trial is expected to last about 10 days, with a scheduled start date of October 25 next year.
Hughes faces multiple allegations, including long-term domestic abuse, controlling and abusive conduct, and assaulting Ms.
Newlands through headbutting, shouting, threats, and physical violence.
The case underscores ongoing concerns regarding domestic violence and homicide in Glasgow.
