BRIAN HADOW SENTENCED IN ULVERSTON FOR SEX OFFENCES COMMITTED OVER 30 YEARS AGO

In a case that has spanned decades, Brian Haddow, a middle-aged man from Great Urswick near Ulverston, has been sentenced for serious sexual offences that occurred more than 30 years ago. The court proceedings revealed that Haddow, now 53 years old, was involved in criminal acts dating back to the 1970s, when he was just 17 years old. These offences took place in the Ulverston area and involved a minor boy under the age of sixteen.

According to court records, Haddow pleaded guilty to eight counts of indecency and two additional charges related to attempting to commit a serious sexual offence. The victim, who has since come forward, contacted local police last year to disclose the abuse he endured as a young boy. The allegations included sexual touching and attempts by Haddow to engage in sexual activity with the boy. It was also revealed that Haddow initially instructed the victim to keep what had happened a secret, adding a layer of manipulation and betrayal to the case.

Prosecutor Miss Lisa Roberts explained that Haddow was arrested and formally charged in March of this year. Notably, Haddow had no prior criminal convictions before these charges. During the court hearing, it was noted that Haddow had already served the equivalent of a 15-month prison sentence while on remand, which lasted for approximately seven and a half months.

In his defense, Miss Farrhat Arshad emphasized Haddow’s prompt guilty pleas and pointed out that there was no evidence of any misconduct or criminal activity in the years following the offences. She also mentioned that Haddow had been married but lost his marriage as a consequence of his arrest, which also led to him losing his home. The defense attorney highlighted Haddow’s remorse and regret, asserting that he lacked maturity at the time of the offences and appeared much younger than his actual age.

Judge Andrew Woolman presided over the case and addressed Haddow directly, describing his actions as wicked. The judge acknowledged Haddow’s limited intelligence and functioning ability, which he considered relevant to the case. While recognizing the impact of Haddow’s actions on the victim, the judge expressed a dilemma faced by the court. Typically, such offences would warrant an immediate prison sentence; however, given Haddow’s circumstances, including his time spent in custody and his mental capacity, the judge decided that a community-based approach would serve the best interests of society.

Consequently, Haddow was sentenced to a three-year community rehabilitation order. This order includes supervision and participation in a sex offenders treatment program, aimed at reducing the risk of reoffending. The judge emphasized that this approach would provide better protection for society than a short-term prison sentence. Additionally, Haddow will be required to register as a sex offender for five years, ensuring ongoing monitoring and management of his conduct.

In conclusion, the court’s decision reflects a careful balance between justice, public safety, and the individual circumstances of the offender, with the overarching goal of preventing future harm while addressing the gravity of the offences committed in the past.
