VIOLENT MAN WHO BATTERED PARTNER AND SET FIRE TO ULVERSTON SHOP IS JAILED

A man branded by a judge as a violent, controlling, manipulative, and coercive bully has been sentenced to imprisonment to protect the public.

Jason Tarr, aged 40 and residing in Kingway, Ulverston, received an extended jail term of 12 years, which includes time served for charges of arson, harassment, and two counts of assault.

Tarr entered a plea of not guilty to all four charges.

The court sentenced him to eight years behind bars with an additional four years on licence.

The arson charge stemmed from an incident on June 8, when Tarr set fire to the Bargain Brands store located on New Market Street in Ulverston.

The assault charges were linked to a series of attacks against his former partner over a period of five months; the first occurred on January 8, and the second in May.

Furthermore, during the trial, Her Honour Judge Jacqueline Beech was told that Tarr harassed his ex-partner between June and August of the same year.

Detective Constable Sarah McArthur, from South Cumbria CID, expressed her satisfaction that justice had been served.

She emphasized that Tarr showed no regard for public safety by setting a building ablaze and noted that nobody was harmed.

She acknowledged the significant negative impact Tarr had on his ex-partner’s life both during and after their relationship.

The judge described Tarr as a violent, controlling, manipulative, and coercive individual, highlighting his dangerous nature and the necessity of protecting the community.

The police also assured that victims of domestic abuse can expect to be treated with care and professionalism.
