DARTFORD TEACHER BRIAN FAGG JAILED FOR 1979 SEX ABUSE OF STUDENT
On June 26th, 2009, a former teacher from Dartford was sentenced to prison for sexually abusing a schoolboy three decades earlier.Brian Fagg, who served as deputy headteacher at Dartford West Boys' School, was sentenced to eight months behind bars.
The victim, now 44 years old, spoke out after the sentencing, describing his feelings and the impact of the crime.
The man, whose identity is protected for legal reasons, recounted, “I have lived with this nightmare for so long.
As a young man you blame yourself for what happened.
You feel like it was your fault.
Back in those days—if anyone had found out they would have ripped me to pieces.
But now I feel vindicated and cleansed.
It’s a huge weight off my mind.” He also emphasized the importance of victims coming forward, stating, “It’s important that other victims who have been abused do come forward and realize they are not alone.
It’s taken a lot of courage, and I have had a lot of counselling, but we’ve got him off the streets which is so important.” The court proceedings revealed that in January 1979, Fagg, who was 40 at the time, molested the young boy.
The incident ended when the victim's doorbell rang.
Prosecutor Ian Foinette recounted that Fagg reportedly looked at the boy and said, “Saved by the bell,” as he ceased his abuse.
Fagg was a biology teacher and was known for discussing research about the size of boys’ genitalia openly in class.
The court heard how Fagg had orchestrated the abuse under the pretense of doing research into puberty, a claim the judge dismissed as false.
Judge Philip Statman commented, “You were in a position of trust.
This offence was pre-planned under the umbrella of your conducting of research into puberty.
This claim was utterly bogus.
The boy was used for the purposes of your own sexual gratification.” Fagg, who in May pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting a child under 16, was also banned from working with children indefinitely and will be listed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for ten years.
