COACH DRIVER WHO PAID A 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL FOR SEX SAID HE DIDN’T REALISE SHE WAS SO YOUNG
Liam Ross, aged 30 from Dartford, appeared before Woolwich Crown Court on Monday, March 2, where he received a 12-year prison sentence.Ross admitted to ten sexual offences, including the rape of a 12-year-old girl.
His criminal actions occurred within the Bexley borough.
He claimed he believed the girl was old enough to give consent, but since rape of a child under 13 is a strict liability offence, his belief about the child's age or consent was not considered relevant.
Judge Ruth Downing acknowledged Ross’ assertion that he thought the girl was older, explaining she held the same belief when she saw the victim.
In addition, a jury convicted Ross of raping and sexually assaulting a different girl, aged 16.
The judge described the case as “difficult and rather disturbing,” highlighting that Ross had engaged in “lawful yet inappropriate” relationships with school-aged girls over the age of consent.
Despite receiving a police warning about the risks associated with his relationship with the 16-year-old girl, Ross continued his actions.
While their initial relationship was consensual, Judge Downing stated that Ross later raped and sexually assaulted her.
Ross was working as a coach driver, often transporting schoolchildren, though authorities confirmed his crimes were not connected to his employment.
A pre-sentence report noted traits of predatory and reckless behaviour, though the judge disagreed with many points of the report.
Judge Downing expressed confidence that Ross would come to see the foolishness of pursuing relationships with underage girls, particularly those over 16.
She remarked, “This might send a message to those who think sailing close to the wind, being risky, is something they might like to do.” Ross will be registered as a sex offender for life.
His guilty pleas encompassed offences including the rape of a girl under 13, paying for sexual services of a child, inciting child exploitation, sexual assault of a minor, and possession of indecent images.
