BRIAN BISSELL FROM TUNBRIDGE WELLS SENTENCED TO 16 YEARS FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN KENT
A man from Tunbridge Wells named Brian Bissell has been handed down a severe prison sentence of 16 years after being found guilty of multiple sexual offences committed against a young girl over five decades ago. The disturbing case uncovered a pattern of abuse that spanned from the late 1960s into the early 1970s, beginning when the victim was just 10 years old. Bissell’s predatory actions included approaching the girl through her bedroom window, engaging in abusive acts at a residence located on Ravenswood Avenue, and further assaulting her while in his vehicle. The abuse escalated to transporting her to a secluded area within Brokes Wood, where additional offences took place. The investigation into these allegations was initiated in 2018, marking a significant effort by authorities to bring justice to the victim. Despite Bissell’s initial denial of the charges, a trial held in 2023 did not result in a verdict, leaving the case unresolved. However, a retrial was scheduled for March 2025, which ultimately led to Bissell’s conviction on five counts of rape. On April 17, 2025, the court sentenced him to 16 years in prison, complemented by an extended license period of one year to ensure ongoing supervision.
Detective Constable Hannah Crittenden provided a statement regarding the case, emphasizing that Bissell exploited the trust placed in him by the victim and her parents. She underscored the fact that Bissell posed a significant and ongoing threat to the community. Crittenden also highlighted the importance of reporting sexual offences regardless of how much time has passed, praising the bravery of victims who come forward to seek justice. Authorities continue to encourage anyone affected by similar crimes to contact the police or access available support services, reaffirming their commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals and ensuring accountability for offenders.
