OBAN MAN JAILED FOR THREATENING WOMAN AND BRANDISHING VIOLENCE IN TOWN CENTRE
An individual from Oban named Brendan McGuckin was sentenced to four months in jail after an incident that involved grabbing a woman and issuing threats.Brendan McGuckin, who has no fixed address, appeared at Oban Sheriff Court in custody to face charges.
He pleaded guilty to forcefully seizing a woman by her body and lifting her arms in Station Square on May 12.
During the incident, he also caused fear or alarm by behaving aggressively, shouting, and swearing repeatedly.
Witnesses who observed the event reported McGuckin became increasingly aggressive, and he threatened to harm others, saying, "I will break your arms and I will f****** kill you all." The police were called, and McGuckin was detained and taken to the police station, where he made no reply to the charges.
The court heard that McGuckin has a previous criminal record, which was admitted by his defense.
His lawyer argued for a chance to work with community support services, noting he regrets his behaviour and has been receiving support.
The sheriff, Euan Cameron, sentenced McGuckin to four months for each of the charges, with the sentences to run concurrently, reducing the usual six months for an early plea.
The incident took place around 11pm when two witnesses, who had been drinking nearby, encountered McGuckin with a woman.
Concerned for her safety, the witnesses approached, but McGuckin became aggressive, grabbing one woman’s wrists and escalating the situation.
The witnesses restrained McGuckin after he threatened to break arms and kill.
The court emphasized that a short custodial sentence was necessary given the circumstances.
