CHELMSFORD MAN SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT AND ANIMAL ABUSE
A man who filmed himself sexually assaulting a woman and threatened to share the footage has been sentenced to 12 years in prison. The offender, Bradley Smith from Chelmsford, also killed the woman's pet hamster and sent her a picture of the deceased animal.
The victim stated in a court hearing, "I was left feeling numb and emotionless, like I was not a human being anymore." Smith, aged 46, was convicted of two counts of assault by penetration and engaging in controlling and coercive behavior after a trial.
He had denied the charges but admitted to disclosing private sexual photographs and videos with intent to cause distress.
The court learned that his actions were part of a campaign of coercive control towards the victim.
During the proceedings, it was highlighted that Smith knew how to manipulate and control her, with the judge stating, "You set your sights on her and you knew she was someone you could manipulate and control." The victim's statement further expressed feelings of guilt, embarrassment, and shame over the degrading footage taken while she was incapacitated.
In her sentencing, Judge Mary Loram KC emphasized that Smith deliberately targeted her vulnerability.
Peter Clark, representing the offender, mentioned that Smith had been affected by personal issues and had been drug-free for two years as an effort to improve himself.
The judge also issued an indefinite restraining order banning Smith from contacting the victim and her family.
