MIDDLESBROUGH MAN THREATENED HIS EX-PARTNER WITH LARGE SWORD

A jealous man who refused to accept his relationship was over threatened his ex-partner with a large sword during a campaign of harassment.

Binny Sharif would verbally abuse his partner in jealous rages and, on two occasions, assaulted the woman during their relatively short relationship.

Teesside Crown Court heard how the 23-year-old would follow the victim about and turn up at her place of work after their romance had dwindled out due to his jealous behaviour.

Tonicha Allen, prosecuting, said the defendant followed her in the street and branded her a ‘w****’ while he was making her life a misery.

She said Sharif pushed the victim into a bath following an argument when he accused her of being with other men while she was at her sister’s wedding in Thailand and on another occasion, he pinned her to the bed and screamed abuse in her face.

“The defendant stalked the woman following their break-up,” she said.

“He would wait at the end of her road; he would follow her on foot when she left her home and turned up at her place of work.” Ms Allen said Sharif pulled a large sword out of his trousers when he confronted the woman at a house party after he was released on bail for the previous offences.

“Two witnesses saw him waving the sword at them and that caused them to fear violence from the defendant,” she said.

“The victim saw him with the sword and she was fearful for her safety due to how aggressive he had been behaving.” Sharif, of Egmont Road, Middlesbrough, pleaded guilty to stalking between December 2024 and February 2025, two counts of common assault between June and November 2024, affray and possession of a bladed article from June 7 this year.

Nicci Horton, mitigating, said her client had been remanded in custody since his arrest and was showing signs of growing up.

“He fell in love hard,” she said.

“He is still young and still immature – that seems to be glaringly obvious from his pre-sentence report.” Recorder Simon Levene sentenced Sharif to two years in prison suspended for two years after he spent six months on remand.

It is gradually dawning on you that what you did was very wrong and very bad.” Sharif was made subject to an indefinite restraining order and ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.
