BENJAMIN GARVIE FROM BANBURY SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE ON INSTAGRAM IN OXFORD
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Banbury, Benjamin Garvie, a 28-year-old man, was sentenced to prison for heinous crimes involving the grooming and sexual exploitation of a young boy.The offences came to light after Garvie, who resided on Howard Road in Banbury, used social media to target a 12-year-old victim, engaging in a series of manipulative and illegal activities that culminated in the filming of the child performing sexual acts.
Garvie’s criminal behavior was carried out through a fake Instagram account, which he created to appear as a 13-year-old from New York.
Under the username ‘Benjogar123,’ he systematically groomed his young victim over several months, from September 2017 to February 2018.
During this period, he coerced the boy into performing sexual acts, including asking him to put his hand down his boxer shorts and record himself doing so.
On some occasions, Garvie instructed the child to perform sexual acts that he then recorded, further evidencing his predatory conduct.
The case was brought to the attention of authorities when the victim’s parents discovered illicit messages on their child’s phone.
The police launched an investigation, which included tracing Garvie’s internet activity through his unique ISP number.
This digital footprint led to his arrest in May of the previous year.
Initially denying any involvement, Garvie later admitted to the charges, which included two counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, three counts of making indecent images, and breaching a previous sexual harm prevention order.
During the police search, officers uncovered numerous indecent images of children in Garvie’s possession.
The images depicted minors as young as ten years old, highlighting the severity and depravity of his offenses.
It was also revealed that Garvie had been subject to a sexual harm prevention order in 2016 for similar offences, and his latest actions constituted a clear breach of that order.
At the sentencing hearing held at Oxford Crown Court, prosecutors detailed the extent of Garvie’s misconduct.
In response, his defense lawyer, Jane Brady, expressed her client’s remorse and his desire to seek help for his offending behavior.
Despite this, Judge Nigel Daly sentenced Garvie to a total of eight years in prison, with an extended four-year period on licence, reflecting the gravity of his crimes.
Following the sentence, Garvie reacted with outrage, loudly claiming that the punishment was ‘a f***ing joke’ and asserting that child rapists received lighter sentences.
He further stated that the sentence was ‘a bit of an unfair sentence.’ After being led away from the courtroom, Garvie issued an apology through his legal representative for his outburst, acknowledging the inappropriateness of his comments.
The case has left a lasting impact on the Banbury community, highlighting the ongoing dangers posed by online predators and the importance of vigilant law enforcement.
