WAKEFIELD MAN JAILED FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER OF EX PARTNER
A violent offender, Ben Swindells, launched a brutal attack on his former partner in Wakefield, kicking her repeatedly in the head and smashing her head onto the ground.
During the assault, he paused briefly to smoke a cigarette before resuming his attack, dragging her by her hair, and continuing the violence.
The incident was witnessed outside Tesco Express at the junction of Sparable Lane and Barnsley Road, leading to his arrest by police.
Swindells, aged 30, of no fixed abode, was found guilty after a trial at Leeds Crown Court of attempted murder.
He was sentenced on 20 December to 23 years imprisonment, with an extended licence period of four years.
The attack resulted in the victim suffering significant facial injuries and swelling to the head, requiring over a week of hospital care.
