SOUTH LONDON MAN GETS LIFE FOR KILLING GIRLFRIEND IN FRONT OF THEIR CHILD
A 36-year-old man named Basil Chawafambira was found guilty of murdering his 21-year-old girlfriend, Czarina Baker, at their residence on Hemans Street in Stockwell, South London.The court heard that Chawafambira used the straps of a nappy bag to restrain and suffocate Baker, ultimately strangling her in front of their six-month-old daughter.
The case was tried at the Old Bailey, where a jury convicted him of her murder on June 14 of the previous year.
He was then sentenced to a minimum of eighteen years in prison.
The couple, who had been together for five years, reportedly argued frequently over domestic responsibilities and Chawafambira’s history of violence toward Baker.
After the incident, he attempted to end his life by overdosing on sleeping pills, but only became excessively drowsy.
Three days later, Chawafambira voluntarily surrendered to police at Brixton station, admitting his guilt.
Authorities found Baker’s body, wrapped in a sleeping bag and covered with a quilt, inside their flat.
Detective Chief Inspector Dave Manning emphasized Chawafambira’s past violent behavior and speculated that Baker believed her child’s birth might change him.
Unfortunately, this was not the case.
The murder was characterized as particularly heinous and took place in the same room as the couple’s infant.
Chawafambira tried to defend his actions by claiming he was provoked, but the jury did not accept this explanation.
Baker’s family, especially her parents, conveyed their sorrow, describing her as a happy young woman before she fell under his influence.
They are now caring for her daughter and expressed deep grief over her loss, hoping that the conviction offers some degree of comfort.
