GRIMSBY SEX OFFENDER ANDREW MADDISON TRIES TO MEET 10-YEAR-OLD GIRL AFTER GROOMING INCIDENTS
In May 2014, Andrew Maddison, 46, of Orion Way, Laceby Acres, Grimsby, was involved in a disturbing case involving a young girl.Maddison approached a girl aged 10 after noticing her and her two sisters in the street and attempted to arrange a meeting with her, passing his phone number to the sisters and stating he wanted to meet her, despite denying any sexual intentions.
The girls informed their mother, who then used the opportunity to trap Maddison by sending him a text message saying, "You asked my friend to give you this number." Maddison responded by calling the number, which was answered by an older sister who gave a false name.
He expressed a desire to go on a date and asked to meet the girl, later sending a text that seemed to confirm a planned meeting.
Alarmed, the mother contacted police, who observed Maddison loitering near some shops on October 31.
A police officer then called Maddison's phone, unknowingly speaking with him, and soon after Maddison was arrested.
Authorities found several text messages on his phone in which he said, "I love you very, very much." During questioning, Maddison claimed he only wanted someone to talk to and to go to a meal with, saying that if the situation had progressed, he would have asked the girl to marry him.
He explained that he had been married to a woman from Ukraine for three years, but she had left him.
Maddison insisted he had no sexual motives and that he only intended to 'kiss and cuddle' the girl.
He cited his learning difficulties as the reason he handed out his card, claiming he could not remember his own phone number and did it on impulse.
Maddison admitted he recognized the girl was under 16.
The court heard that Maddison had no previous convictions and had been in custody since his arrest.
He later pleaded guilty to attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming.
The judge described his behavior as "very alarming" and potentially "terrifying" for the young girl.
As part of his sentence, Maddison was subjected to a three-year supervision order that includes participation in a sex offenders' treatment program.
He is also required to register as a sex offender for five years, and he received a seven-year sexual offences prevention order.
Additionally, he was fined a statutory charge of £60.
