ANDREW DITCHFIELD OF DERBY AND LINCOLNSHIRE SENTENCED TO 38 YEARS FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES
A heinous paedophile who committed decades of horrific sexual offences against children in the suburbs of Derby, as well as in Derbyshire and Lincolnshire, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison with an additional eight-year licence period.Andrew Ditchfield, aged 54, perpetrated numerous severe sex crimes, including rapes and sexual assaults on multiple young victims during the 1990s and 2000s.
His abuse occurred across areas such as Chaddesden, Littleover, Sinfin, and Alvaston, often taking place inside homes, campsites, and leisure venues.
Described as a "manipulative and predatory paedophile," Ditchfield targeted highly vulnerable children in Derbyshire before relocating to Lincolnshire, where he continued his offending.
He initially denied all charges, forcing all 14 of his known victims to testify and relive their trauma in Derby Crown Court during his August trial.
The ordeal was so distressing that one victim attempted to take their own life.
The court learned that his victims were left profoundly damaged, suffering from flashbacks, difficulties forming close relationships, trust issues with men, PTSD, and suicidal thoughts.
On October 15, at Derby Crown Court, Judge Robert Egbuna sentenced Ditchfield to 30 years of imprisonment and ordered an extended licence of eight years.
This resulted in a total sentence of 38 years.
Mr.
James Varley, prosecuting, stated that Ditchfield was "a man whose entire life seemingly revolved around the sexual abuse and grooming of young boys." He described Ditchfield as "a predatory paedophile who preys on the young and the vulnerable, most often vulnerable teenage boys." The prosecution described how Ditchfield used alcohol, drugs, and access to pornography to earn his victims’ trust, often employing a "souped-up" car to attract children.
He would establish friendships with parents, posing as a social worker or someone seeking to assist vulnerable children.
His offending began with children sleeping over at his house, which eventually escalated to sexual activities and assaults, including rape and attempted rape.
In some cases, he even illegally adopted victims by submitting fake paperwork to court, falsely claiming to be their foster carer.
After relocating to Lincolnshire, Ditchfield’s abuse persisted until his arrest in 2017.
The victims’ emotional impact statements revealed the devastating effects of his crimes—one victim shared they "didn't get a chance at a childhood," and many had attempted suicide.
Numerous victims were diagnosed with mental health conditions such as depression, PTSD, and anxiety.
Charlotte Rimmer, Ditchfield’s solicitor, told the court that his family remains supportive of him.
She explained, "He was adopted as a baby.
His adoptive parents, with whom he has stayed in contact, remain supportive.
It's a close-knit family, and they are utterly shocked by these proceedings." She acknowledged that Ditchfield himself accepted the inevitability of a lengthy sentence but emphasized he denied the offences.
Judge Egbuna emphasized the seriousness of Ditchfield’s crimes, noting that his offending spanned several years, involved careful planning, and targeted vulnerable children.
He stated, "You groomed your victims, distanced them from their families, and exploited the trust placed in you.
The impact of your abuse has been significant—many consider it an understatement." While acknowledging that Ditchfield had also abused two young girls, the judge believed his primary motive was to gain sexual experience and manipulate perceptions of heterosexual relationships.
He remarked, "You are dangerous—I agree with that assessment—using deception to fulfill your needs.
You are a manipulative and cunning man, and I saw this clearly while you were giving evidence." Ditchfield was also subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, prohibiting him from contacting children until further notice.
CPS prosecutor Chris Knowles called the case’s scale "staggering," adding, "The sheer extent of Ditchfield’s offending reveals relentless abuse of vulnerable children and the profound harm inflicted upon their lives.
He pretended to be a caring individual, deceiving families and caretakers, which left many survivors feeling isolated." He further commented, "Many victims have come forward after hearing about the investigation.
It was important that they had a voice, and the case has exposed Andrew Ditchfield as a dangerous predator.
Despite his denials and blaming the victims, the jury’s guilty verdicts and today’s sentence make clear he is solely responsible." Reflecting on the sentencing, Mr.
Knowles emphasized how Ditchfield’s refusal to accept responsibility and his dangerousness justified the lengthy prison term.
