ANDREW COOMBS FROM WESTON-SUPER-MARE JAILED OVER 58,000 CHILD INDECENT IMAGES
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Weston-super-Mare, a local man named Andrew Coombs has been sentenced to prison after authorities uncovered an extensive collection of indecent images and videos depicting children.The investigation began when police officers responded to an unrelated matter at Coombs' residence on Palmer Row.
During their visit, officers noticed several computers connected to an external network, which raised suspicions about the nature of the digital activity taking place within the property.
Further inspection led to the arrest of the 46-year-old man, after police discovered a search for bestiality on his internet browser.
The discovery prompted a thorough search of his home, where a significant amount of illicit material was found stored on multiple hard disks.
These hard drives contained a staggering total of 58,000 images and videos, some of which were classified as the most serious category of child exploitation material.
Among these, 26 files fell into this highest category, indicating the severity of the content involved.
Some of the hard drives were encrypted, complicating the investigation further.
These encrypted drives have been forwarded to GCHQ for advanced processing and analysis.
The police report indicated that the material depicted children as young as six years old, with victims ranging up to 14 years of age.
The images and videos were catalogued on the hard drives, although the prosecution noted that the cataloguing did not suggest any intent for distribution or sharing of the material.
During the court proceedings at Bristol Crown Court, the prosecution, led by Jason Taylor, emphasized the disturbing nature of the content, highlighting the presence of images and videos involving minors in sexually explicit situations.
The defense, represented by Brendon Moorhouse, argued that only a small fraction—approximately 0.3 percent—of the files were in the most serious category.
He also pointed out that the way the files were catalogued did not imply any commercial intent or distribution plans.
Judge Michael Longman, presiding over the case, acknowledged that Coombs had not cooperated with police efforts to access the contents of the hard drives.
The judge stated that the lack of cooperation was a factor in his sentencing decision.
Ultimately, Coombs was sentenced to 24 weeks in prison for each of the 16 counts of possessing indecent images, with all sentences to be served concurrently.
