DOMESTIC ABUSER WHO TRIED TO SUFFOCATE AND STRANGLE HIS FORMER PARTNER JAILED
A man who domestically abused his former partner by attempting to suffocate and strangle her has been sentenced to prison after she courageously decided to report his actions.Throughout the previous year, Alistair Hopkinson engaged in a pattern of violent conduct directed at the woman during their relationship.
His aggressive behavior intensified when he experienced jealousy, leading him to choke her on two separate occasions, ultimately causing her to lose consciousness.
On 29 August last year, Hopkinson struck the woman in the face and then grabbed her by the throat until she passed out.
His violence continued to escalate on 19 September, when he forced her face into a pillow, making it difficult for her to breathe.
Nearly a month later, on 18 October, he strangled her again at a Nottinghamshire address until she lost consciousness.
When she awoke, she managed to fight him off and alert the authorities, who arrived shortly afterward to arrest Hopkinson.
The woman’s bravery in reporting his assaults allowed police to gather evidence, leading to charges including two counts of intentional strangulation, one of intentional suffocation, and assault causing actual bodily harm.
Hopkinson, of Chesterfield Road, Worksop, pleaded guilty to these charges and appeared before Nottingham Crown Court for sentencing on 4 June.
He was sentenced to two and a half years in prison and issued a restraining order preventing him from any contact with the woman.
Additional charges of assault causing actual bodily harm and controlling or coercive behavior were left on file, with no further action taken at this time.
