PLEADED GUILTY TO SEVEN SEX CHARGES = GIVEN A SUSPENDED SENTENCE FOR ABHORRENT IMAGES OF CHILDREN!!!!
A man involved in downloading and sharing explicit images of children as young as ten has been warned that incarceration can be extremely harsh for individuals involved in such crimes.Alex Piper was detained after Devon and Cornwall Police acted on information regarding his illegal activities.
A search warrant was executed at his residence on Werrington Drive in Callington on July 23 last year.
At the time of his arrest, Piper was at work; his phone was confiscated and subsequently examined by authorities.
They uncovered 11 grade-A indecent images of children, including two videos, along with seven grade-B and 25 grade-C images depicting minors.
During a hearing at Truro Crown Court on September 12, prosecutors revealed that further analysis of Piper’s device uncovered an encrypted email server through which he communicated with another individual in the United States.
They discussed child sexual abuse and shared related images.
The court was also told that police described the content of the images as "graphic and gross," showing children aged 10 to 15 being raped.
During police interviews, Piper made vague admissions but denied guilt.
He was convicted in a magistrates’ court on three charges of creating indecent images of children, three counts of distributing such images, and one charge of publishing an obscene article.
Defence lawyer Christopher Spencer stated that Piper has shown remorse and that his life has deteriorated significantly, citing his divorce and estrangement from his daughter.
Spencer argued that a community order would be appropriate and noted that Piper is currently unable to work due to mental health issues.
Judge James Adkin warned that prison could be "hell on earth" for offenders like Piper, emphasizing the seriousness of the crime.
While willing to suspend a prison sentence, the judge made it clear that future offences would result in imprisonment.
Piper, who has no prior convictions, was sentenced to 20 months in prison, suspended for two years.
The judge highlighted that while creating or downloading indecent images is severe, distributing them amplifies the harm and is particularly reprehensible.
In addition to his suspended prison term, Piper will be registered as a sex offender for a decade.
He will also be subject to a sexual harm prevention order for five years, complete 30 days of rehabilitative activities, and observe a curfew from 6pm to 6am for five months at his residence.
