MAN TRIED TO MEET UP WITH 15-YEAR-OLD GIRL
In a case that has raised serious concerns about online safety and predatory behaviour, Alasdair Saunders, a resident of Stow, appeared in court to face charges related to an incident that took place in July in Galashiels.The proceedings revealed that Saunders had engaged in inappropriate communication with a young girl via Snapchat, a popular social media platform.
According to the prosecution, India MacLean, Saunders had initiated contact with the girl through Snapchat and subsequently arranged to meet her at the Volunteer Hall in Galashiels on July 28.
The meeting was intended for unlawful sexual activity, which Saunders had explicitly planned during their online conversations.
The girl, who was under the age of 16, confided in her mother about the nature of her online interactions with Saunders.
Acting on this information, the mother decided to accompany her to the designated meeting point at the Volunteer Hall.
When Saunders arrived and saw that the girl’s mother was present, he quickly drove away in his car, avoiding further contact.
The mother promptly reported the incident to the police, leading to an investigation that uncovered Saunders’ intentions and actions.
During the court proceedings, Saunders admitted to communicating with a person he knew was under 16 and to making arrangements to meet her with the intent of engaging in unlawful sexual activity.
He also attempted to meet the girl, which further substantiated the charges against him.
However, Saunders entered a plea of not guilty to a separate charge of intentionally sending a written sexual communication to the teenage girl.
The Crown accepted this plea, but the core charges related to the meeting and communication were admitted by Saunders, highlighting the seriousness of the case and the potential risks involved in online interactions with minors.
