ALAN GIBSON FROM CHATHAM SENTENCED AFTER ATTEMPT TO MEET 11-YEAR-OLD FOR SEX IN QUEENBOROUGH
In a disturbing case that highlights ongoing efforts to combat online child exploitation, Alan Gibson, a 55-year-old resident of Chatham, was sentenced to a total of three years and four months in prison after attempting to meet an 11-year-old girl for sexual activity. The incident unfolded when Gibson, who resides on Rowan Lea Road in Chatham, traveled from his home to Queenborough by train with the explicit intention of engaging in sexual acts with a young girl he believed was only 11 years old.
Gibson's actions did not go unnoticed by law enforcement.
In September, officers from Kent Police apprehended him in Queenborough, where he had traveled with the clear purpose of meeting the child for sexual purposes.
The police investigation revealed that Gibson had been actively seeking opportunities to commit a child sex offence, and his arrest was part of a broader effort to prevent such crimes.
Following his arrest, Gibson was formally charged with one count of arranging to commit a child sex offence.
He subsequently appeared at Maidstone Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to the charges.
His guilty plea led to a sentencing that included a prison term of three years and four months, reflecting the seriousness of his actions.
In addition to his prison sentence, the court imposed a sexual harm prevention order that will remain in effect for ten years, restricting Gibson's access to children and online platforms.
Furthermore, he was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to prevent further offences.
Detective Constable Kinga Hammersley, a member of the online child exploitation unit, commented on the case, emphasizing the proactive stance of law enforcement.
She stated, “We proactively target people who view indecent images of children, abuse children or use the internet as a way of seeking opportunities to commit offences against children using various methods.
In this case, we intercepted a man who purposely travelled to Queenborough with the intention of abusing a young child.” This case underscores the persistent threat posed by individuals seeking to exploit children online and the importance of vigilant law enforcement efforts to protect vulnerable minors from harm.
