ALAN CHARMAN JAILED FOR SEX OFFENCES IN WHITBY
In a case that has shocked the community of Whitby, a local man named Alan Charman has been sentenced to a year in prison following his conviction for serious sex offences involving a young girl.The incident, which took place in Whitby, led to Charman's appearance before Teesside Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to two charges of indecent assault against a ten-year-old girl.
During the court proceedings, prosecutor Paul Cleasby detailed the nature of the offences, stating that Charman's actions involved inappropriate touching of the young girl.
The court was informed that the offences were committed in a manner that was clearly unacceptable and harmful to the victim.
Charman, aged 49 and residing on Oak Road in Whitby, was represented by defence barrister Dan Edwards.
In his plea for leniency, Edwards emphasized that Charman did not have a predatory intent.
Instead, he argued that Charman had taken advantage of a situation and had not continued his actions once the girl expressed her discomfort.
Edwards sought to portray Charman as someone who did not persist in his misconduct once the victim made her feelings known.
Despite these arguments, Judge Les Spittle sentenced Charman to 12 months in prison.
The judge also ordered that Charman be subject to a two-year extended licence period following his release.
Additionally, Charman was mandated to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years, reflecting the severity of the offences and the court's concern for public safety in Whitby and beyond.
