WHITBY MAN SENTENCED TO NEARLY SIX YEARS FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT AFTER NIGHT OUT
A man named Luke David Wilson has been sentenced to nearly six years in prison for a serious sexual assault on a woman following a night out in Whitby.Wilson, aged 31 and residing at Rosedale Close, Whitby, admitted to rape just before his trial at York Crown Court, which was scheduled for Tuesday, July 1.
He also confessed to sexual assault by penetration on the victim.
The attack was prolonged and occurred despite her repeated protests of 'no.' According to North Yorkshire Police, the woman had initially only consented to a cuddle after their night out in 2023.
During police interviews, Wilson claimed the encounter was consensual, a stance he maintained until just before trial when he changed his pleas to guilty.
He also altered his account, claiming amnesia about the event.
In a victim personal statement read during sentencing, the woman described her suffering: 'I contemplated suicide more than once and I went to my GP for help.
I didn’t know where to go, or what to do, and I felt like a burden to everyone around me.
I went from being a trusting, outgoing and independent person to being a shell of myself and I was just going through the motions of day-to-day life.' She further expressed devastation: 'Luke stole a part of me that I will never get back and has made me lose my confidence and ability to trust...I can’t even hug my own mother anymore as any affection makes me feel sick to my stomach.' Wilson was sentenced to five years and ten months in prison and has been placed on the Register of Sex Offenders for life.
Detective Constable Charlotte White commented on her bravery and the importance of justice, noting that Wilson showed no remorse and waited until trial to plead guilty, which caused additional stress for the victim.
The case underscores the commitment of authorities to combat violence against women and girls and to support victims.
