A former pub manager from Whitby has received a prison sentence after violently attacking his ex-partner, an assault that resulted in a torn eardrum and a fractured hand.

Jack Taylor, aged 29 and once in charge of the Star Inn on Haggersgate, was convicted of physically assaulting the woman in his flat on August 29, 2020.

The court heard that Taylor assaulted her by punching and choking her, with the victim stating she believed she could have died during the brutal episode.

Court records from York Crown Court reveal that Taylor also twisted her wrist so violently it caused a fracture.

Prosecutor Elizabeth Muir explained that just a month after their breakup, the victim and her friend were out drinking and ended up at another friend's flat in Whitby, where Taylor was also present.

An argument ensued as the couple exchanged push and shove actions.

The pair eventually reconciled and returned to Taylor’s flat above the pub, where the violence intensified.

Ms Muir described how Taylor, angry and jealous because he suspected her of communicating with another man via her phone, broke her phone and began assaulting her.

This included throwing her onto a sofa and hitting her head, with the force causing her ear to “pop.” Taylor then attempted to choke her and held her in a headlock before twisting her wrist to the point of fracture.

The victim and her friend tried to escape, but Taylor detained them in the flat until they managed to leave through another exit.

Following this, Taylor pursued them downstairs, pulling the victim by her hair and dragging her repeatedly.

The woman and her friend fled to a nearby house where they found her covered in bruises and cuts.

She originally did not report the incident due to threats from Taylor but filed a complaint in September 2020 after persistent messages.

Taylor, who has previous cautions for battery involving other partners, was charged with causing grievous bodily harm and criminal damage.

He appeared in court via video link for sentencing.

The victim expressed that she now struggles to trust others and had to move house for her safety, which caused her emotional and financial hardship.

Her injuries remain unhealed, and she faces surgery to repair her ear.

Defense representative Ismael Uddin noted Taylor’s remorse and ongoing treatment for anger and alcohol issues while in custody.

Judge Sean Morris sentenced him to a prison term of two years and eight months and issued a five-year restraining order.

North Yorkshire Police Detective Constable Ruth Freebrey stated that Taylor’s assault was driven by jealousy and emphasized the seriousness of the case, reaffirming their commitment to justice and community safety.
