ADRIAN JOYCE'S SHOCKING EXPOSES IN RUNCORN: COURT SENTENCE FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES
In January 2018, a disturbing case unfolded in Runcorn involving Adrian Joyce, a 27-year-old man whose pattern of indecent exposure shocked the local community and led to his conviction. The incidents, which spanned over a week in October, involved Joyce repeatedly approaching women and teenage girls under the guise of asking for directions before engaging in lewd acts in his vehicle, a Volkswagen Golf.
Prosecutor James Coutts detailed how Joyce employed a disturbing tactic, pulling up alongside unsuspecting victims and asking for directions.
Once he had their attention, he would perform a sex act on himself, often with his zipper open or his trousers around his thighs.
This behavior caused the victims to flee in disgust and report the incidents to authorities.
The first of these offences occurred on Wednesday, October 11, around 3:30 pm, when Joyce was seen in view of a 13-year-old girl walking home from school.
The girl, startled by his actions, quickly fled and informed her mother about the encounter.
The following day, Joyce committed another offence in the same area, this time in front of two 15-year-old girls he had called over under the pretense of asking for directions.
Police confirmed that these incidents took place in different parts of Palacefields, a neighborhood in Runcorn.
The pattern of offending continued with a series of disturbing acts in various locations, including Halton Road, Boston Avenue, and Latham Avenue.
On October 17 at approximately 6:30 pm, Joyce targeted an adult woman on Halton Road.
He repeated this behavior later that evening at 8:10 pm on Boston Avenue, and again just fifteen minutes later on Latham Avenue.
Victims described feeling a mixture of disgust and shock at Joyce’s actions.
One victim recounted an incident where Joyce motioned downward with his head and asked, “Do you like that?” or “What do you think of that?” Such comments and gestures underscored the disturbing nature of his conduct.
The court heard that Joyce’s activities caused significant distress to those involved, with Judge Simon Berkson noting that the incidents must have been “very upsetting” for the victims.
Authorities intervened on November 11, bringing Joyce’s sickening spree to an end.
During police interviews, Joyce made various admissions but denied performing a sex act or seeking sexual gratification, claiming instead that his actions were a form of “stress relief.” His claims drew skepticism from the court, with Judge Berkson remarking that his explanations “raised eyebrows around the court.” Joyce later pleaded guilty to five counts of indecent exposure.
It was revealed that he had prior convictions, including five offences such as battery, possession of an offensive weapon, and criminal damage.
Before his sentencing, Joyce had spent two months in custody and was fitted with an electronic tag while awaiting trial.
In sentencing, the court handed down a six-month prison term, suspended for two years.
Additionally, Joyce was ordered to adhere to an 8 pm to 7 am curfew, complete 200 hours of unpaid community work, and register as a sex offender for the next seven years.
The case highlighted the serious nature of his offences and the impact on the victims, emphasizing the importance of justice and community safety in Runcorn.
