CHILD SEX OFFENDER ADRIAN JONES OF ELLESMERE PORT SENTENCED TO 14 YEARS IN PRISON
In September 2006, Adrian Martin Jones, a child sex offender from Ellesmere Port, was sentenced to 14 years in prison, with his own family praising the punishment as 'richly-deserved.' During the sentencing at Chester Crown Court, members of the public in the gallery cheered and shouted insults such as 'die, you b*****d' as Jones was led away.Judge Elgan Edwards described Jones, aged 46, as 'sick and perverted,' stating that this was one of the worst cases he had presided over. Jones had pleaded guilty to 26 serious sexual charges, which included seven counts of indecent assault, six of indecency with a child, and two additional sex offenses. The court also banned him from working with children and mandated that he remain on the national Sex Offender’s Register for life.
Prosecutor Ken Schultz revealed that Jones, of Norley Avenue, had engaged in sexual offenses against both boys and girls in the town between 1991 and 2006. He added, 'He was arrested on May 4 of this year. He also has a prior conviction for having sex with an underage girl in 1983.'
In his defense, Gordon Hennell submitted a letter from Jones, which included an apology to his victims and an acknowledgment that he did not realize the extent of the harm he caused. Hennell noted that Jones should be given credit for his guilty pleas.
Judge Edwards condemned Jones’s actions, stating, 'You behaved in a sick and perverted fashion; it was disgusting. The offences are extremely grave, some of the worst to come before the court. You richly deserve your sentence.'
Following the case, Jones’s family issued a statement via police, saying, 'We are pleased with the length of the sentence imposed. We do not and never will support any paedophile, even when it is a family member, and condemn all such acts upon children. As no family member was aware of his actions, it was a sickening shock to us all.' They also expressed their sympathy to the victims, saying, 'To his victims, we can only say a heartfelt sorry for what he’s done. Without their courage in coming forward, he might have continued abusing for much longer.' They also thanked PC Brendan Crilley for his investigative work.
Consideration was given by Judge Edwards to reveal Jones’s identity publicly, and he lifted the ban on the press, citing it was in the public interest to know who Jones was.
