ADAM MARTIN FROM YORKSHIRE SENTENCED TO LIFE FOR SHOCKING SEXUAL ATTACK IN KIRKLEES

A man identified as Adam Martin, aged 26, from Cleckheaton in Yorkshire, has been handed a life sentence after being convicted of multiple serious sexual offences in Kirklees. The sentencing took place at Leeds Crown Court, where the court heard details of a brutal and sustained assault carried out against a lone victim.

Martin was found guilty of two counts of rape, sexual assault, attempted rape, and several other related offences, including Section 47 assault, threats to kill, and two counts of intentional strangulation. The court was informed that these offences occurred during the early evening hours of December 7, 2023, in a cemetery located in Cleckheaton. The severity and nature of the attack were described as particularly shocking, highlighting the predatory behavior of the offender.

During the proceedings, it was revealed that Martin had deliberately targeted his victim after spotting her walking home from the bus station. Following his surveillance, he followed her and ultimately dragged her into Whitcliffe Cemetery, where the assault took place. The victim managed to return home after the incident and was able to report the attack to the authorities, demonstrating resilience in the face of trauma.

Law enforcement officers responded swiftly, arresting Martin within hours of the offence. He was subsequently charged and appeared before magistrates on December 11. The investigation was led by the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team (HMET), which thoroughly examined the case and gathered substantial evidence against Martin.

Detective Inspector Jodie Hayes of the HMET expressed her views on the case, stating, “Adam Martin committed a shocking attack against a lone victim, and we welcome his sentencing at court today. He identified and followed his victim before committing a sustained and vicious attack. There is no doubt whatsoever that he is a highly dangerous sexual offender who has acted in the most predatory way.”

She further emphasized the importance of reporting sexual offences, saying, “Reports of sexual offences are treated incredibly seriously by West Yorkshire Police, and victims are encouraged to come forward and report incidents. Our organization is victim-focused, and the welfare of victims is paramount. All reports are fully investigated by experienced detectives who can also signpost victims to services that can provide the help and support they need.”
