2012: MAN JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Abdul Mehri, aged 25, considered his sexual assault of a teenage girl from a different ethnic background to be harmless, believing it did not violate his religious principles. The incident took place on January 17 of the previous year, when the 16-year-old girl was in a bathroom applying makeup and had met Mehri only once before.
He entered the room and attempted to put his hands down her leggings, but she was able to pull away.
Mehri also repeatedly asked her to perform a sex act.
He denied committing sexual assault, but a jury found him guilty following a trial.
The offence would not typically lead to imprisonment, but the court described Mehri’s conduct as both predatory and opportunistic.
Judge Everett remarked, “You saw your victim as an easy target to satisfy your sexual needs, believing this was consistent with your religious beliefs.
That is evident.
Your behaviour was arrogant; you thought that if she spoke out, no one would believe her.
This case sends a clear message that exploiting young women in this manner will result in prison.” Furthermore, the judge advised that Mehri, who is from Afghanistan and resides on Tildsley Street in Daubhill, should be deported to his home country.
He has been in the UK since 2005.
