AARON COLSON FROM LONG EATON JAILED AFTER BREACHING COURT ORDERS IN DERBYSHIRE

In October 2019, a serious incident unfolded involving Aaron Colson, a known sex offender from Long Eaton, Derbyshire, which culminated in his being sentenced to jail after a series of breaches of his court-imposed conditions. The case was heard at Derby Crown Court, where it was revealed that Colson, aged 33, had deliberately flouted the terms of his suspended sentence, thereby undermining the judicial process and showing a blatant disregard for the court's authority.

According to court reports, Colson had previously been handed a four-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, earlier in January of that year. This sentence was the result of his conviction on two counts of sexual assault, although the specific details of these offenses were not disclosed during the hearing. As part of his probation conditions, Colson was required to complete 50 hours of unpaid work and to participate in rehabilitation activity requirement days, which are designed to help offenders address the underlying reasons for their criminal behavior.

However, the court heard that Colson failed to fulfill these obligations. He was unable to complete the unpaid work, and an additional 20 hours were subsequently added to his requirements. More critically, he ceased attending scheduled appointments with his probation officer, which are integral to his rehabilitation process. The reason for this abrupt cessation was reportedly due to a falling out with a new supervising officer assigned to him.

During the hearing, it was disclosed that Colson’s non-compliance was further exacerbated when he chose to walk out of a meeting with his probation officer after being laughed at by her. This incident prompted him to leave the appointment and not return, effectively breaching the conditions of his suspended sentence. The court was told that this act of defiance was a clear violation of the court’s orders and demonstrated a lack of remorse or willingness to engage with the rehabilitation process.

Colson’s legal representatives pleaded with the judge to avoid sending their client to prison, arguing for leniency. However, Judge Robert Egbuna was unpersuaded by these pleas. In delivering his sentence, the judge stated, “It makes a mockery of the court to give you a chance and you not to comply with it. When you appeared before me on the last occasion I made it absolutely clear to you what would happen if you failed to comply with the order. You knew the score and I could not have made it any clearer to you. You come back before the court saying you had a dispute with your probation officer and as a consequence you breached your order? I am sorry but you are not getting another chance.”

Consequently, Colson was sentenced to two months in prison for his breaches. The judge emphasized the importance of respecting court orders and the consequences of failing to do so, especially in cases involving serious offenses such as sexual assault. This case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the justice system in ensuring offenders adhere to their rehabilitation conditions and the importance of accountability in the criminal justice process.
