SCOTT MEALYOU SENTENCED IN FELIXSTOWE AND MUSSELBURGH SEX OFFENSE CASE
A man named Scott Mealyou, who committed a disturbing sexual assault against a nine-year-old girl in Felixstowe eight years ago, has been sentenced in a court hearing that drew significant attention. Despite the severity of the crime, the judge opted not to impose an immediate prison sentence, instead choosing a more lenient approach that included a suspended jail term.According to court records, the assault occurred in 2009 when Mealyou, then a resident of Felixstowe, placed his hand inside the young girl’s clothing and touched her between the legs. The incident remained undisclosed until 2015, when police were finally alerted to the case. The delay in reporting highlights the often-hidden nature of such offenses and the challenges law enforcement faces in uncovering them.
Prosecutor Joanne Eley revealed that in 2010, Mealyou had previously been incarcerated for 20 weeks after being convicted of sexually touching two other girls under the age of 13. This history underscores a pattern of concerning behavior that had already resulted in criminal penalties.
In July, Mealyou, now aged 32, pleaded guilty to the charge of sexual assault during a court hearing. The case was adjourned to today to allow for the preparation of a pre-sentence report, which would inform the judge’s final decision.
At the sentencing hearing, held at Ipswich Crown Court, Judge Martyn Levett delivered his judgment. He noted that Mealyou, who currently resides in Musselburgh, Scotland, had undergone significant lifestyle changes since the offenses. The judge emphasized that these changes had led to a reassessment of the risk he posed to the public.
As a result, Mealyou was sentenced to two years in prison, but this sentence was suspended for two years, meaning he would not serve time unless he committed another offense within that period. Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender and was explicitly banned from making any contact with the victim of the assault.
Judge Levett’s remarks highlighted that, despite the gravity of the crime, the court recognized the potential for rehabilitation given Mealyou’s apparent efforts to change his lifestyle. The case remains a stark reminder of the ongoing issues surrounding child protection and the importance of vigilance in safeguarding vulnerable individuals.
