WREXHAM MAN GETS COMMUNITY ORDER AFTER DOMESTIC ASSAULT OVER PHONE
A man who became enraged and assaulted his partner by punching her in the ribs has been sentenced to a community order. Zak Willsmer, aged 31 and formerly residing in Weston Rhyn, appeared before Wrexham Magistrates Court on a Tuesday to face sentencing after admitting to charges of criminal damage and assault. The incident occurred on August 13 last year against his partner, Tabitha Griffin. Prosecutor Justin Espie explained that Willsmer called the police around 4 pm reporting a domestic incident involving himself and Ms. Griffin. When officers arrived at the scene, Ms. Griffin told them that the altercation was triggered by a dispute over a mobile phone, during which Willsmer pinned her to her bed to seize the device. He then managed to snatch the phone and walked downstairs with it, prompting her to follow him and ask for it back. As the victim requested the phone, Willsmer pushed her into the banister and struck her windpipe with his forearm, temporarily blocking her breathing. When she demanded the phone again, he lurched and punched her on the upper arm and ribs. Fortunately, no restraining order was requested, and there were no visible injuries from the event. The court heard that Willsmer has an addiction to cocaine and used drugs on the morning of the incident, as he was 'coming down.' Probation Officer Pamela Roberts stated that the defendant began experimenting with cocaine six or seven years ago and admitted to struggles managing his anger, saying he believed he had an anger problem. Defense solicitor Ceri Lewis expressed disappointment at seeing Willsmer back before the court, noting that he was extremely remorseful and ashamed, having 'saw red' during the altercation. The court was told that Willsmer is also battling issues related to uncontrolled emotions and anger management. As part of his sentence, the judge ordered an 18-month community order, including 10 rehabilitation days, up to 35 days on a 'building better relationships' program, and a six-month drug rehabilitation requirement. He was also required to pay £300 in compensation to the victim, along with a fine of £100 and costs totaling £85. The court emphasized the importance of addressing underlying emotional issues to prevent further incidents.
