WARRINGTON MAN SENTENCED FOR ASSAULTING GIRLFRIEND AFTER NIGHT OUT
A BULLY has been sentenced by the court of assaulting his girlfriend during a row following a night out.Younis Kasem was charged with assault by beating over the incident, which he was convicted of following a trial, having denied the offence.
The 25-year-old appeared back before Warrington Magistrates’ Court to face sentence on Wednesday, where he was assisted by an Arabic interpreter.
Alex Farrow, prosecuting, told the court that the complainant in the case, the defendant’s partner, made a 999 call on April 25 this year.
It was heard that she had been in an argument with Kasem after returning from a night out.
During the argument, the defendant is said to have grabbed her by her hair and her mouth, causing bleeding inside her mouth.
He was also said to have been chased away by the complainant’s father.
A recording of the 999 call was played in court in which the distressed complainant described being punched by Kasem, who was also said to have pulled her hair.
The court heard that Kasem, who appeared without legal representation, has no previous convictions.
However, it was said that he used substantial force and that he was not entitled to any credit, having been convicted following a trial.
The court was also told that the complainant does not support the prosecution of Kasem, who it was said moved to the UK from Syria via Lebanon.
Deputy district judge Imran Hussain asked the defendant if he had anything he wished to say to the court in mitigation, which he did not.
Before sentencing, the judge said: “This must have been frightening for her.” Kasem, of Boyle Avenue in Orford, was sentenced to a 12-month community order.
During this period, he must complete 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days and undertake 60 hours of unpaid community work.
In addition, the court ordered that he pay costs to the Crown Prosecution Service of £650 and a victim surcharge of £114.
