TEEN JAILED AFTER ABUSING EX-PARTNER
A teenage boy who subjected his former girlfriend to a violent campaign of abuse over more than two years has been sentenced to prison.Shaun Hughes, aged 19, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court last week to face charges.
It was revealed that he had been in a relationship with the woman for approximately five years until she reported his abusive behavior in December 2025.
During their relationship, which began when they were both around 15, Hughes was possessive and aggressive.
He would confront other boys if they seemed to flirt or look at her and exercised control over her choices, including what she wore and her friendships.
The prosecution's case indicated that Hughes became physically violent in April 2023, pushing her off the bed while she was pregnant with his child, causing her to fall onto her stomach.
Instead of showing remorse, he reportedly told her that it was not his fault.
In April 2025, during an argument, Hughes told his ex to be quiet, fearing her noise might be overheard by his father.
When she attempted to leave, he blocked her path, demanded she go back to bed, and kicked her in the back of her legs.
The court further heard that such violence became frequent, involving slaps, pinning her arms, pulling her nose, and spitting at her.
Hughes also mocked her in front of others, which she felt demonstrated his lack of respect and control.
The relationship ended on Christmas Day in 2025, after Hughes visited her home and made comments about feeling guilty.
An argument ensued, during which he slapped her across the face and strangled her, terrifying her into believing he might kill her.
She subsequently reported the incident to the police.
Officers observed marks on her face and neck, and she expressed fears that leaving Hughes would make her life difficult.
Hughes was taken into custody, and during police interrogation, he declined to comment and laughed when his abusive actions were recounted.
A victim impact statement was read in court, describing her feelings of anxiety when in public with him and stating that her overall quality of life was significantly deteriorated during their time together.
