COVENTRY MAN GETS LIFE FOR PUSHING EX-GIRLFRIEND OFF BRIDGE
Yonas Beraki, age 33, was convicted of murdering his former girlfriend, 41-year-old Genet Kidane, in Coventry.
Court proceedings revealed that Beraki pushed Ms Kidane off a bridge in January, resulting in her death.
His body was discovered near her remains on the city's ring road by the canal basin bridge, where he was found injured.
Evidence showed that Ms Kidane had previously warned police about Beraki’s threats to kill her multiple times.
Despite being deported twice during investigations, he had returned to the UK and continued making threatening gestures.
Judge Richard Griffith-Jones characterized Beraki's actions as obsessive, stating, 'Because she rejected you, you decided she would die...
if you couldn’t have her, then she couldn’t have a life of her own.' Beraki was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 12 years before parole eligibility.
West Midlands police emphasized that the sentence reflected the severity of his malicious act, and outside the court, officers reaffirmed that Beraki's behavior was indicative of a harmful intent.
The case is also being examined by the Independent Police Complaints Commission, as Beraki’s history includes threats and acts of violence toward Ms Kidane, who had come to England seeking a new start.
Family and police spokespersons stated that justice was achieved, emphasizing that Ms Kidane, described as 'kind and gentle,' was a victim of a tragic, violent crime.
