WILLIAM MCDONALD'S BRUTAL ATTACK IN INVERNESS-SHIRE AND NAIRN HARBOUR LEADS TO TWO-YEAR JAIL SENTENCE
A man responsible for endangering a woman’s life by forcefully pushing her from a pier into the cold waters of the sea has been sentenced to two years behind bars. William McDonald, aged 76, was found guilty of this violent act, which was part of a series of aggressive incidents spanning several decades across Scotland, from May 1975 to August 2022.The High Court heard detailed accounts of McDonald’s actions, including an incident at Nairn Harbour in June and August of 1987. During these episodes, he forcibly pushed a woman into the water, putting her life at serious risk. The court was also informed that McDonald had a history of violent behavior towards this woman, which included grabbing her hair, causing her to strike a chair, and even biting her on the nose during other assaults. These repeated acts of violence painted a disturbing picture of his conduct over the years.
Investigations by the police eventually uncovered the extent of McDonald’s violent history. Following a thorough inquiry, he was charged and brought to trial. The jury found him guilty of serious assault and threatening behavior earlier this year at the High Court in Inverness. However, he was acquitted of any sexual assault charges.
On Wednesday, Judge Michael O’Grady KC delivered the sentence, emphasizing the severity and cruelty of McDonald’s actions. The judge described his conduct as deeply disturbing, marked by cruelty and a blatant disregard for the victim’s safety. He stated that such behavior warranted a custodial sentence, which was the only appropriate punishment under the circumstances.
During the proceedings, McDonald’s defense lawyer, Jonathan Deans, highlighted that his client had previously operated a gardening business and had led a life that was generally pro-social. Despite this, Judge O’Grady made it clear that the pattern of violence demonstrated a disturbing propensity towards cruelty. The judge concluded that the only suitable resolution was to impose a two-year prison term, reflecting the seriousness of the offenses committed in Inverness-shire and Nairn Harbour.
