Security guard William Lafferty, 25, pounced as his 26-year-old victim walked past him around midnight as she went to buy a takeaway.
He followed her, asked for sex and when she refused, dragged her into bushes and pushed her to the ground.
The High Court in Glasgow was told the woman put up a struggle and managed to pick up a stone and hit Lafferty.
He ran away and the woman managed to flag down a passing police car.
Lafferty, whose address was given as Barlinnie Prison, admitted assaulting the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, with intent to rape in Pollokshaws Road, on June 5, 2005.
The court was told the woman found the incident profoundly traumatic and finds it impossible to go out on her own.
Lafferty was put on the sex offenders' register and will be sentenced next month.
