WAYNE THOMPSON GATESHEAD SEX OFFENDER JAILED FOR PREDATORY ATTACKS ON SLEEPING GIRLS
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Gateshead, Wayne Thompson has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being convicted of heinous sexual offenses committed against two young girls, with incidents spanning over a decade and a half.The court proceedings revealed a pattern of predatory behavior by Thompson, who exploited the vulnerability of sleeping victims on separate occasions, leaving a trail of trauma and devastation.
Thompson, aged 34, was found guilty of raping a teenage girl in 2019 and sexually assaulting another girl approximately 15 years earlier.
The first assault occurred when the victim was asleep in her home, and she awoke to find Thompson on top of her.
The Newcastle Crown Court heard that despite her initial fear, she summoned the courage to disclose what had happened to her the following day.
This disclosure led to charges of rape being brought against Thompson.
While awaiting trial for the 2019 incident, a second victim came forward, revealing that Thompson had also entered her bedroom while she was sleeping, and sexually assaulted her.
She recounted how she woke up to find Thompson had pulled down her pants and underwear, and that his actions caused her pain.
The court was told that her distress was evident, and she described her experience as having a lasting impact on her life.
Thompson denied both allegations, maintaining his innocence throughout the proceedings.
However, the jury found him guilty of both rape and assault by penetration, leading to his conviction.
During the trial, a statement from the first victim was read aloud in court, in which she expressed her feelings of devastation and loss of innocence.
She described how the abuse had led her down a destructive path, including struggles with alcohol, and expressed her heartbreak over the fact that her attacker had taken her youth.
The second victim also provided a heartfelt statement, asserting that Thompson's actions had “ruined my life and any future I was building.” She shared her ongoing battle with depression, revealing that she sometimes feels overwhelmed by her mental health struggles and finds daily life to be a challenge.
Her words underscored the profound and lasting damage caused by Thompson’s predatory behavior.
Thompson’s legal representative, Liam O’Brien, maintained that his client continued to deny the allegations, asserting his innocence.
Despite this, Judge Penny Moreland sentenced Thompson to 15 years in prison, with an additional five-year extended license period.
The judge also ordered Thompson to register as a sex offender for life, emphasizing the gravity of his crimes.
In her sentencing remarks, Judge Moreland highlighted the disturbing nature of Thompson’s offenses, noting that he had, on two separate occasions, entered the beds of sleeping girls to commit penetrative sexual acts.
Adding to his criminal record, Thompson was also sentenced to eight months for dangerous driving after leading police on a high-speed chase through Gateshead while he was on bail for the rape charges.
This reckless behavior further demonstrated a pattern of disregard for the law and public safety.
The case has left a lasting scar on the victims and the Gateshead community, serving as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and safeguarding vulnerable individuals from predatory offenders.
