VITO MINAUDO CHILD ABUSE SCANDAL IN CLEATOR MOOR

In April 2006, a disturbing case of child abuse involving Vito Minaudo, a 65-year-old tailor originally from Sicily, came to light in the town of Cleator Moor, located in west Cumbria. Minaudo was convicted of multiple sexual offenses against young girls and boys, leading to a prison sentence that would significantly impact his life and reputation.

Initially, Minaudo faced nine separate allegations, which included seven counts of engaging in sexual activity with minors and two counts of sexual assault. The victims, some as young as 12 and 14 years old, were subjected to a harrowing trial that lasted an entire week. It was only at the last minute that Minaudo changed his plea, admitting guilt to all charges against him.

The court proceedings revealed the extent of Minaudo’s misconduct. Two of his victims, a 12-year-old girl and a 14-year-old girl, were compelled to give evidence via video link from Carlisle Crown Court, due to the sensitive nature of their testimonies. One of the 14-year-old girls recounted how Minaudo had pushed her onto a bed and assaulted her, during which he told her she was “gorgeous and lovely.” She later described how there had been “many different occasions when she and her friends were sexually assaulted,” indicating a pattern of abuse.

Another victim described walking into Minaudo’s garden shed and witnessing her 14-year-old friend pulling up her jeans. On a separate occasion, she saw Minaudo lying beside her friend in a tent, with his hand under the duvet and seemingly attempting to undo her belt. These incidents, among others, took place in various locations, including the bedroom Minaudo shared with his wife, highlighting the breach of trust and the predatory nature of his actions.

It was established that Minaudo had regularly befriended children who came to his home for odd jobs in his garden, using these opportunities to carry out his sexual abuse. The court heard that Minaudo exploited his position of trust and respect within the local community, offering cigarettes, food, friendship, cannabis, and money to lure and manipulate his young victims.

During the sentencing, Judge Paul Batty QC described Minaudo’s actions as a gross abuse of his role and trust. Minaudo, visibly emotional, dabbed his eyes with a tissue as the judge delivered the verdict. Although his wife and daughters were not present in court, his two sons-in-law attended to witness his sentencing.

Judge Batty sentenced Minaudo to five years and nine months in prison. He also ordered that Minaudo be placed on the sex offenders register for life and prohibited him from working with children ever again. Additionally, Minaudo was subjected to a sexual offenders prevention order, which prevents him from being left alone with children under 18, excluding his immediate family and grandchildren.

It is noteworthy that Minaudo had previously attracted media attention in 1999 when he chased a burglar down the street in the nude after waking up to find someone raiding his home, a bizarre incident that added to his notoriety in the area.
