VAUGHN MACKAY SENTENCED IN BICESTER FOR INDECENT IMAGES OF CHILDREN IN OXFORD

In a case that highlights the disturbing rise in the possession of indecent images of children, Vaughn Mackay, a 52-year-old man from Bristol Road, Bicester, was brought before Oxford Crown Court in September 2012.

The court heard that Mackay was found in possession of a significant collection of illicit images, totaling 190 still photographs, which prompted serious concern from the judiciary about the increasing prevalence of such offenses.

Judge Mary Jane Mowat addressed Mackay directly, emphasizing the troubling trend of offenders involved in similar crimes.

She stated, “You join the increasing stream of people coming before these courts for possession of indecent images of children.

If there is one growth area in the last few years in the criminal court it seems to be this.” Her comments underscored the growing challenge faced by law enforcement and the judicial system in tackling this particular form of child exploitation.

Prosecutor Cathy Olliver provided details about the nature of the images, revealing that 130 of them were classified as level one, indicating the least serious category.

However, a concerning 33 images were rated at level four out of five, signifying a higher degree of severity and potential harm.

The police investigation into Mackay’s case began in 2010 when authorities executed a raid at his residence.

Despite the raid occurring two years prior, charges were only formally brought against him in 2012 after forensic analysis of the images, which had been stored in temporary internet files or deleted files, confirmed their illicit nature.

During the hearing, Mackay’s defense attorney, Daniel Wright, expressed remorse on behalf of his client.

He argued that the viewing of the images was accidental, suggesting that the images were found in a manner that indicated unintentional access.

Wright emphasized, “What he does say, this was an accidental viewing on the internet, as perhaps is supported by the amount of images found, but I say this delicately because of course any number of images should be viewed as serious.” In response, Judge Mowat sentenced Mackay to a two-year supervision order, which includes participation in a ‘cyber safe’ treatment program aimed at addressing online behavior and preventing future offenses.

Additionally, Mackay was ordered to pay costs amounting to £400 and was mandated to sign the sex offender register for a period of five years.

The court’s decision reflects the seriousness with which such crimes are treated, emphasizing both punishment and rehabilitation in efforts to protect children and prevent recidivism.
