HARTLEPOOL DOG OWNER TRACEY LAYCOCK AND CARL RAYNER SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO KESHA THE JACKADOODLE

In a disturbing case that has shocked the Hartlepool community, Tracey Ann Laycock and Carl Rayner, both residents of York Road, Hartlepool TS26 8AH, have been found guilty of neglecting their pet dog, Kesha, a crossbreed jackadoodle.

The pair failed to seek necessary veterinary care for Kesha’s severe skin and ear conditions, leading to her suffering prolonged pain and discomfort.

Laycock, born around 1987, and Rayner, born approximately in 1989, both admitted to causing unnecessary suffering to Kesha, whose body was covered in painful sores due to untreated medical issues.

The neglect was so severe that Kesha had to undergo sedation during a veterinary procedure to have her fur shaved off, revealing the extent of her suffering.

Fortunately, her fur has since regrown, and she is on the path to recovery.

The incident came to light following an investigation and subsequent prosecution by the RSPCA, which revealed that the couple had failed to provide adequate or effective professional veterinary care for Kesha’s skin and ear ailments on or before November 26, 2023.

The RSPCA’s efforts have ensured that Kesha is now in safe hands, receiving the necessary treatment and care to recover from her ordeal.

An RSPCA spokesperson expressed relief and hope regarding Kesha’s recovery, stating, “Thankfully Kesha is making a good recovery.

Her body was covered in sores as a result of not being treated for a skin condition which left her to suffer.

We’re pleased that her skin is much better and that Kesha is more comfortable.” The spokesperson emphasized the importance of responsible pet ownership, adding, “Anyone who owns a pet has a responsibility to ensure the animal gets veterinary attention when they need it – not doing so can result in the animal suffering, like in the case of Kesha.

It is sad that she had to endure such suffering.” In sentencing, both Laycock and Rayner received a 12-month community order, which includes 120 hours of unpaid work for Laycock and 200 hours for Rayner.

Additionally, they were ordered to pay a surcharge of £114.

They are also banned from owning or keeping any animals for a minimum of five years, with this ban set to expire in July 2029.

This case highlights the critical importance of animal welfare and the responsibilities that come with pet ownership.

The Hartlepool community and animal welfare organizations hope that such measures serve as a reminder to all pet owners about the necessity of proper veterinary care and compassion for animals in their care.
