MET OFFICER CONVICTED OF RAPE IN LONDON
A serving Metropolitan Police officer has been convicted of a serious sexual offence.PC Tony Watts, who was attached to the North Area Command Unit, was found guilty of rape and has been remanded in custody following a trial at Croydon Crown Court on Tuesday, 8 July.
The incident for which he was convicted took place between mid-January and early February of 2020 when he was off-duty.
The victim-survivor received support from specialized officers throughout the investigation and trial.
Detective Chief Superintendent Caroline Haines from the North Area Policing Team condemned Watts' actions, stating that he showed a complete disregard for the victim and his duty to protect women and girls.
She emphasized that the police force is committed to removing corrupt officers and that Watts being held accountable is crucial.
She also encouraged victims to come forward, assuring support from the force.
Watts was arrested in May 2022 after the incident was reported, and he was later charged with rape on 25 September 2024.
He was suspended from duty and will face sentencing on 11 August at Croydon Crown Court.
Meanwhile, the professional standards team within the Met is aware of the case, and a misconduct hearing will follow.
