TONY POTTER AND SHOCKING SEXUAL ASSAULT IN GATESHEAD

A man named Tony Potter was involved in a serious sexual assault incident that took place in Gateshead, highlighting a disturbing breach of trust and safety within the community.

The incident occurred after Potter had been invited to stay at the home of a woman who believed he was experiencing mental health difficulties.

Out of compassion, she offered him her hospitality.

The woman, who was kind-hearted and empathetic, had no idea that her generosity would lead to such a traumatic event.

According to reports, Potter, aged 41 and residing on Lobley Hill Road in Gateshead, spent the evening consuming alcohol and Valium during his stay at the woman's residence.

The night unfolded with the two socialising casually, but the situation took a dark turn during the early hours of the morning.

The woman was woken abruptly by a painful sensation and immediately realised that she was being sexually assaulted by Potter.

Despite her attempts to resist and free herself, Potter refused to stop his assault.

In a desperate effort to defend herself, she grabbed a nearby Pot Noodle cup containing a fork.

She used it as a weapon to strike Potter in the face in an attempt to force him to desist.

Immediately following the incident, she accused Potter of raping her.

However, his response was dismissive; he laughed and attempted to minimize the gravity of what had occurred, claiming she was a heavy sleeper and that he had been biting her to wake her up, which he said had not worked.

Potter dismissed her serious accusations as if they were merely jokes, seemingly making light of the situation.

The woman, emotionally traumatized by the assault, managed to get Potter to leave her home.

She later reported the incident to the police, revealing that the experience had left her suffering from flashbacks and difficulty sleeping.

Her account depicted a distressing aftermath of violation and emotional distress.

Legal proceedings revealed that Potter had a long history of criminal activity, with 29 previous convictions encompassing 61 offences.

Notably, in 2018, he attempted to steal a car while fleeing from police after attacking a man at Newcastle Central Library, an incident that demonstrated his pattern of violent and criminal behaviour.

Despite these past offences, he had no previous convictions related to sexual offences.

The case was brought to court, and the prosecution outlined the details, with Liam O'Brien representing the Crown.

He stated that the events depicted a pattern of troubling behaviour.

During the trial, it was established that Potter's social media posts suggested he was struggling with mental health issues, which prompted the woman to reach out and offer support.

In his defence, Peter Schofield explained that following the incident, Potter had taken steps to address his issues, including moving away from the North East and completing a 12-step programme for alcohol and drug dependency.

He had also obtained qualifications as a forklift truck driver, passed his full driving test, and secured employment with a delivery company in Blackburn, demonstrating efforts to turn his life around.

Mr.

Schofield noted that Potter had not committed any offences since 2020.

Despite these efforts and his clean record since 2020, Judge Penny Moreland sentenced Tony Potter to serve seven years in prison.

Additionally, she imposed a 10-year restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim and ordered him to register as a sex offender for life.

The sentence underscores the severity with which the court views this case, emphasizing the gravity of sexual assault and the importance of community safety in Gateshead.
