A Scottish football coach has received a 20-month jail sentence following a violent attack on his partner.
Tony McNally, aged 33, assaulted Stephanie Whiteside by repeatedly hitting her head after she fell, causing injuries such as a cut lip and dislodged front teeth.
He was convicted at Airdrie Sheriff Court by a jury of assault resulting in significant, permanent disfigurement and impairment.
McNally’s former positions include head coach at Annan Athletic, youth development officer at Dumbarton, and under-20s coach at Clyde.
The jury, which deliberated for approximately two and a half hours, found him guilty on March 12 of the attack that took place the previous year on March 9 in a house in East Kilbride.
The court’s decision included a recognition of the damage to his career, which is now considered “in tatters.” It was revealed that at the time, McNally was under two bail conditions dating back to September and October 2018 from Glasgow Sheriff Court.
Sheriff Morag Shankland explained that due to the severity of the permanent injuries, she had no option but to sentence him to prison for 20 months, despite the jury’s finding of provocation.
Additionally, she imposed a four-year non-contact order with his victim.
The prosecution highlighted his previous convictions.
Meanwhile, defense lawyer John Kilcoyne stated that McNally has been involved in football coaching since he was 19, presently managing a team in Sweden.
He was in a long-term relationship for 13 years and has an eight-year-old child.
Kilcoyne added that the assault occurred after the relationship ended and that alcohol was involved.
McNally admits the assault was serious but claims it was provoked, expressing concern over the custodial sentence.
He is under a two-year contract with his Swedish club and works long hours, from morning until late evening.
He is willing to pay £2,500 in compensation within a year and maintains a positive reputation among many.
He has no immediate plans to pursue new relationships and notes this is his first violent offence.
