HARLOW MAN TONY MCLERNON JAILED FOR LIFE FOR KILLING PREGNANT PARTNER
Tony McLernon, the individual responsible for the homicide of Eystna Blunnie—a woman who was pregnant at the time—has been officially sentenced for his crimes. He was found guilty of assaulting her in June 2012, which led to her death as well as the death of her unborn child.
The jury at the inquest determined that her death was unlawful, thereby confirming McLernon’s guilt.
Her family had campaigned for two years to ensure a comprehensive investigation, which culminated in the verdict of unlawful killing.
Kevin Blunnie, her father, stated that he felt relief that justice had been served through a proper inquiry, and he noted improvements in systems designed to protect victims of domestic violence.
In May 2013, McLernon received a life sentence for his violent conduct.
The case also exposed failures among authorities, who were aware of McLernon’s history of domestic abuse with previous partners yet failed to prevent the attack.
Essex Police confirmed they knew about his violent past, and agencies such as Essex Social Care and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) were involved in handling his case.
This tragic event highlights the persistent issues related to domestic abuse and emphasizes the necessity for effective intervention to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
