HARTLEPOOL DARTS PLAYER TONY ECCLES SENTENCED TO 16 YEARS FOR RAPE OF VULNERABLE GIRL

In a case that has shocked the community of Hartlepool, Tony Eccles, a professional darts player, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 16 years after being found guilty of multiple serious sexual offenses against a young girl.

The court heard that Eccles, aged 44 and residing on Northgate in Hartlepool, had committed a series of heinous acts over several years, beginning when the victim was just 11 years old and continuing until she reached 16.

Judge George Moorhouse described Eccles’s actions as “systematic” abuse, emphasizing the severity and duration of the crimes.

Eccles was convicted after a rigorous two-week trial of five counts of rape and five counts of indecent assault.

The court was informed that the abuse started with inappropriate touching and escalated to full sexual assault, including a disturbing incident that took place in bushes.

The victim recounted how Eccles would manipulate her by giving her CDs and cigarettes, and would threaten to send her to the “dirty girls’ school” if she ever disclosed the abuse.

During the sentencing, Judge Moorhouse expressed his condemnation of Eccles’s conduct, stating, “This was systematic, serious abuse over a number of years.

It has clearly had an adverse effect on the victim – psychological scars that she will have with her for the rest of her life.” The gravity of the case was underscored by the judge’s remarks about the lasting impact on the victim’s mental health.

Prosecutor Shaun Dodds highlighted the disturbing online threats made by Eccles’s supporters, who had threatened the victim with violence and attempted to reveal her identity, which is protected by law.

Dodds warned those responsible to cease such activities, reaffirming the police’s awareness and commitment to protecting victims.

Defense lawyer Jim Withyman described Eccles as a talented and well-respected darts player, noting that the allegations had led to his estrangement from family and that he had been prescribed anti-depressants while awaiting the trial’s outcome.

Eccles, who previously lived in Middlesbrough’s South Bank, had achieved notable success in the sport, reaching the quarter-finals of the British Darts Organisation world championships earlier this year before announcing his retirement.

He has also won more than a dozen major tournaments.

Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Caroline Mead of Cleveland Police expressed her hope that the conviction would encourage other victims of abuse to come forward.

She stated, “I am delighted with the sentence passed today – this man systematically abused a child from the age of 11 until she was 16 and I hope this sends out a message to anyone who has carried out such abuse that we will catch up with you and you can look forward to a lengthy custodial sentence.”
