FATHER JAILED FOR VIOLENTLY SHAKING BABY TO DEATH
A man named Tony Allen, aged 28, was convicted of violently shaking his seven-week-old son, Dominic, to the extent that the baby suffered fatal injuries. The incident occurred in Cornwall, where Allen was left to care for Dominic while his partner Sherrie was on the phone.
On April 21, 2001, Dominic died after suffering a serious bruise to the back of his head and a brain haemorrhage, as confirmed by an autopsy the following day.
Prosecutors presented evidence that Allen shook his son to stop him from crying, including testimonies that he shook him so vigorously that his head flipped backwards and forwards, and that he intended to cause serious injury during a second assault.
During the trial, Allen claimed he loved his son and did not kill him, denying both murder and manslaughter charges.
The judge, William Taylor, sentenced Allen to life imprisonment, stating: "You have been convicted of inflicting injuries on your baby son from which he died.
The jury found that at the time you shook him vigorously, you intended to cause serious harm.
I believe this was the result of a sudden loss of temper which you regretted immediately afterward." Following his conviction, Allen married Dominic's mother and the couple moved to the St Austell area.
The court heard that Allen had claimed he had not shaken the baby or caused any injury before the incident and maintained he was unaware of how severe the injuries were.
The case highlighted the tragic consequences of abuse and the importance of awareness and prevention of shaken baby syndrome.
Allen's sentencing was met with condemnation, emphasizing the need for alertness and intervention in cases of child abuse.
