BODMIN DOG OWNER BANNED FROM KEEPING ANIMALS AFTER SICKENING ABUSE

A man has been banned from keeping all animals, except fish, for eight years after his dog was found severely malnourished and with ulcers on her wrists.

David James Etchells, 24, of Dymond Court in Bodmin, pleaded guilty to an animal welfare offence following an investigation and prosecution by the RSPCA.

Roxy, a female Staffordshire bull terrier cross, was rescued from Etchells home by an RSPCA officer after being found in a collapsed state with her bones visible.

The vet who examined Roxy said she was weak, unable to stand and only just able to lift her head.

They added Roxy had severe muscle loss from her head, shoulders, body and hind legs.

She had ulcers on her left and right wrists and damage to the end of her tail.

The vet said Roxy’s condition, including skin irritation over her lower back, was due to a lack of an appropriate diet.

They said she was emaciated with a body condition score of 1/9, and had been without an appropriate diet for several weeks or possibly months, suffering pain, hunger, stomach cramps, and contractions when she was fed.

It was concluded she was very close to death when first examined.

Etchells is banned for eight years from keeping all animals, except fish, with the possibility of appeal in four years.

He was ordered to do 120 hours of unpaid work, pay £400 costs, and a £114 victim surcharge at Bodmin Magistrates Court on March 24.

In mitigation, Etchells expressed remorse, stating he was very sorry and had no income or job at the time.

Roxy was signed over to the RSPCA for rehoming, has gained more than 8 kg in three months, and was found to be thriving after rehabilitation and a new loving home.

Inspector Pearson emphasized the importance of pet owners reaching out for help if they struggle to care for their animals.
