TIMOTHY PENNINGTON'S HORRIFIC CRIME IN NELSON AND BURNLEY: SCHOOLGIRL GROOMED AND SEXUALLY ABUSED

In April 2008, a disturbing case emerged involving Timothy Pennington, a man from Nelson, who was convicted of grooming and sexually abusing a young girl in the nearby town of Burnley.

The case was heard at Burnley Crown Court, where the details of his heinous actions were laid bare, revealing a pattern of predatory behavior that spanned over two years.

Pennington, aged 37 and a married man, worked as a garage mechanic.

His crimes centered around a 12-year-old girl, whom he lured into his home while his wife was away at work.

The court heard that during these visits, Pennington engaged in sexual intercourse with the girl at his residence in Nelson.

The victim later recounted to police that their encounters involved watching pornography together and using sex toys, which added a disturbing layer to the abuse.

Further investigations uncovered that Pennington had downloaded highly disturbing and illegal child pornography, including images depicting bestiality.

Some of these illicit videos and images were shown to the girl, further exposing her to inappropriate material.

The court was told that Pennington, who is a grandfather, claimed after his arrest that the girl was blackmailing him for revealing their relationship to his wife.

He insisted that no sexual activity had taken place and shifted blame onto her.

Pennington’s mental state was also a matter of concern.

It was revealed that he had attempted to take his own life the previous year, overwhelmed by guilt and remorse over the abuse he inflicted on the young girl.

The court was informed that he was deeply troubled by his actions, which he described as 'horrific.' He faced multiple charges, including raping a child under 13, engaging in three counts of sexual activity with a child, and producing four indecent images of a child.

All these charges were admitted by Pennington during the proceedings.

The judge, Beverley Lunt, emphasized the vulnerability of the victim, a 12-year-old girl, and expressed her condemnation of Pennington’s actions.

In her sentencing remarks, Judge Lunt acknowledged the letters from Pennington’s family, which claimed his behavior was out of character.

However, she pointed out that these offenses were entirely consistent with his true nature, which he had concealed from his loved ones.

As a result, Pennington was sentenced to 12 years in prison and was ordered to register as a sex offender for life.

Additionally, he was subjected to an indefinite sexual offences prevention order, which restricts his contact with minors.

The order prohibits him from associating with any child under 16 unless accompanied by a parent, guardian, or responsible adult.

It also bans him from entering any residence where a child under 16 resides, working in roles that involve contact with children, or owning or using a computer at home.

These measures aim to prevent any further harm and protect potential victims.

Prosecutor Dennis Watson explained that the abuse occurred between 2005 and 2007 and came to light after the victim’s mother discovered chocolate wrappers in her daughter’s room.

When questioned, the girl revealed that Pennington had given her the wrappers and had been engaging in sexual activity with her.

She also disclosed that Pennington had been texting her, which her parents monitored, leading them to contact the police.

In an interview in February of the following year, the girl, then 13, initially hesitated but eventually admitted to having sex with Pennington and trusting him.

She recounted that he had met her early in the mornings and taken her to his house or parked in an alleyway for their encounters, which occurred approximately once a week from when she was 12.

She also told police that Pennington had instructed her not to tell anyone about their relationship, fearing he would get into trouble.

Pennington was arrested on February 13 of that year, and authorities seized his computer and sex toys from his residence.

During questioning, he claimed that the girl had initiated the contact and that no sexual activity had occurred.

He maintained that she had made advances towards him.

Pennington had no previous criminal convictions.

His defense lawyer, Charles Brown, argued that while Pennington had exploited the girl, he was not a predatory sex offender seeking victims.

Brown emphasized that Pennington was aware of the wrongfulness of his actions, expressed remorse, and did not attempt to justify his behavior.

He read a letter from Pennington, in which the defendant expressed deep shame and described his contempt for himself, acknowledging the damage caused to the girl and his own family.

Ultimately, the court’s verdict reflected the severity of the crimes committed by Timothy Pennington in Nelson and Burnley, highlighting the importance of safeguarding children from such predatory individuals and ensuring justice is served.
