WREXHAM MAN JAILED FOR VIOLENT SCISSORS ATTACK ON ESTRANGED WIFE
Thuruirajah Sureshkumar, aged 52 and residing on Kingsmills Road in Wrexham, received a prison sentence after admitting to causing grievous bodily harm with intent.Prosecutors characterized him as a jealous and controlling individual who repeatedly assaulted his estranged wife, Sathiyabriya Sorubakanphan, upon learning she had a new partner.
The court heard that the couple had separated in April of the previous year but still communicated because they shared two children, with Sureshkumar holding a key to her house.
It was also revealed that he had been secretly monitoring her using a concealed camera, which he moved around to observe her interactions and movements.
His jealousy was identified as the trigger for the violent attack.
On April 12, while she was on the phone with her boyfriend at home, Sureshkumar called her and threatened her life before arriving at her property around 9pm.
During the altercation, he played a recording of her speaking to another man, then grabbed a large pair of fabric scissors and began assaulting her.
He held her by the hair, threatening to shave her head and punish her, before striking her multiple times on the head, neck, back, and groin.
Her injuries were severe, including a degloving injury to the scalp, wounds on her shoulders and back, and complete numbness in two fingers.
Sureshkumar initially claimed that his ex-wife had cut her own hair and had lunged at him with scissors, but he could not explain her injuries.
After fleeing the scene, he contacted his priest, then surrendered to police, where officers found the hidden camera and numerous images and videos stored on it.
The court took into account his guilty plea and mental health reports but described him as a manipulative person with previous convictions, including a bomb hoax in Liverpool motivated by fears of returning to Sri Lanka.
The judge labeled him a dangerous offender and sentenced him to eight years in total—five years and eight months in prison, plus an additional two years and four months on extended license.
He will be required to serve at least two-thirds of his custodial sentence before being eligible for parole.
